Gervonta Davis KOs Rolando Romero

Rolando Romero fought far better than one might expect from a 10-1 underdog in his easy title fight against Gervonta “Tank” Davis on Saturday at the Barclays Center in New York.

But when you fight Davis, it’s not enough to fight well.

In a KO’s bout, a counterattack with the left hand by Davis was enough to end the fight at 2:39 of the sixth round.

Romero had talked an incredible amount of trash before the fight and had predicted a knockout in the first round. But instead of turning it into a savage brawl, Romero fought an intelligent and controlled fight and held his own in the fight.

Davis was leading by two of the three maps at the time of the stoppage. Ron McNair had Davis 49-46 and Robin Taylor had him 48-47. Kevin Morgan had it 48-47 for Romero. Yahoo Sports had it 48-47 for Davis.

The judges were not expected to play a role in this case as both undefeated fighters had huge KO ratings. Davis came in with 24 knockouts in his 26 wins, and Romero had 12 knockouts in his 14 wins.

The fight ended when Romero threw a straight right hand quite far. Davis immediately hit a left and Romero fell face first into the ropes. He got up, but referee David Fields looked him in the eye and stopped him.

Davis compared it to Juan Manuel Marquez’s knockout of Manny Pacquiao in 2012.

“The crazy thing is I wasn’t throwing hard,” Davis said of the final shot. “I just threw it and he ran straight into it. I didn’t throw it that hard.”

Davis retained his WBA title with the win and will have many options. Next week, unified champion George Kambosos Jr. meets Devin Haney for the undisputed title in Melbourne, Australia. Davis is in the best position to face this winner.

He said he was open to any big fight and said he relied on his power.

“There’s no safety on this Glock and I’ve got a lot of ammo,” Davis said of his left hand.
