‘I’m so frugal’ – Serena Williams was careful not to forget her roots despite her meteoric success

It was the 2009 Wimbledon Championships. Serena Williams faced off against her older sister, Venus Williams, in that tournament’s pinnacle match. The latter had a wonderful tournament and empathetically knocked out top seed Dinara Safina in the round of 16.

In the final, however, the younger Williams sister prevailed. Serena won her third title at Wimbledon. After raising the title, Serena revealed a useful life lesson from her parents.

Serena Williams on spending wisely

During an interview, Serena opened up about her humble background growing up. she said, “I want to get a new car, but I’m not used to spending money. I’m tight, yes I’m so thrifty, you won’t believe it. When I was growing up, my mom and dad were so much, ‘Don’t be like the average athlete and have all this money and spend it all.’ And I always want something. I don’t want everything. I won’t buy a new car until I win something.”
