Scouting report: Ruud returns to Bastad, Felix & Murray headline Newport | ATP Tour

The action takes place across two continents and two different surfaces on the ATP Tour this week, with established stars going head-to-head on clay Nordea open in Bastad, Sweden, and on grass at the Infosys Hall of Fame opens in Newport, Rhode Island, United States.

FIVE THINGS TO SEE IN BASTAD
1) Reigning Champion Ruud: Kasper Ruud will lead the field in Bastad as he aims to retain his title at the ATP 250 event. The Norwegian, who didn’t lose a set en route to the 2021 Cup, completed a hat-trick on clay court last July with his cup success in Bastad, followed by triumphs in Gstaad and Kitzbühel. The 23-year-old is confronted Francisco Cerundolo or a qualifier in his opening game.

4) Schwartzman & Spanier target deep runs: Diego Schwartzman, Pablo Carreno Busta and Roberto Bautista Agut will try to use their experience when they compete on clay in Bastad. The trio, who have won 21 tour-level titles combined, have all previously played at the ATP 250 event, with Schwartzman reaching the quarterfinals in 2017 and Carreno Busta in 2014 and 2018.

The Argentinian Schwartzman starts against it Daniel Altmaier or Elias Ymer and Carreno Busta meets the former world No. 3 Stan Wawrinka, who advanced to the third round in Rome in May. Bautista Agut plays Ruusuvuori or Thiem.

5) Rune & Musetti strive for more clay success: #NextGenATP Dane Holger Rune has had a stellar season, climbing the Pepperstone ATP rankings to number 29 of his career while clinching his first tour-level title on clay in Munich in April. The 19-year-old, third at the Pepperstone ATP Race To Milan, is making his second appearance in Bastad after reaching round two last year. The Dane will open against a qualifier.

#NextGenATP Italian Lorenzo Musetti holds a 15-5 record on clay at all levels in 2022 and reached the third round at ATP Masters 1000 events in Monte Carlo and Madrid before claiming an ATP Challenger Tour title in Forli. The 20-year-old will play Laslo Djere in the first round.

FIVE THINGS TO SEE IN NEWPORT
1) Felix Top Seed: Canadian Auger-Aliassime will make his debut at the ATP 250 grass court event in Newport after accepting a wildcard. The 21-year-old will try to recover from a disappointing first-round exit Wimbledon He’s looking to win his second tour-level title of the season. The top seed will face each other Jason Kuebler or Jordan Thompson in his first game.

World No. 9 Auger-Aliassime is the first top-10 player to compete in Newport in the tournament’s 46-year history.

2) Murray receives a wild card: After 16 years, Murray will be competing again in Rhode Island after receiving a wild card from the tournament. The 35-year-old, who reached the semifinals in Newport 2006 – his last appearance at the tournament – enjoyed a run on grass in Stuttgart last month before falling in the second round at sc Wimbledon.

The Scot will be looking to get off to a good start in the United States when he meets American Sam Querrey in the first round.

3) Four-time champion Isner: Big American John Isner has fond memories of Newport having lifted the trophy four times.
