Will Power wins both poles for the IndyCar doubleheader

NEWTON, Iowa – Will Power dominated qualifying at the Iowa Speedway to secure pole position on the grid for both NTT IndyCar Series races.

With the sweep, Power has now qualified first three times this season and boasts 66 career pole positions – including tying the legendary Mario Andretti for the all-time IndyCar record.

“In that qualifying session, all season long, I was like, ‘This is where I can really do damage, I can really, really put myself in a position to get there,'” said Power.

“I shot it as far as I could. I left nothing on the table.”

Power snapped teammate Josef Newgarden for first place on the grid in both races. The Penske Dallara-Chevrolets team, second and third in the championship standings, will own the front row on Saturday and Sunday.

Meanwhile, championship leader Marcus Ericsson will start on Saturday 12 and Sunday 15.

“I had the feeling that you have to start in the top 10 to have a good race,” said Power. “It seemed a bit difficult to overtake. Although cars can often fall off. You can make some positions good, you can improve some positions with strategy.

“I hope this is a good weekend for us to catch Marcus because he is very strong. He’s not the best qualifier but probably the best racer in the series. Over the years he has been racing he is one of the toughest guys. Like he’s very, very good at starting at the back and working his way all the way to the front.”
