Simona Halep in action at the WTA Washington Open.

WTA Washington Day 3 predictions including Halep vs Kalinskaya

The 2022 WTA Washington Open features four women’s second-round singles matches on Wednesday. Interestingly, none of these games have ever been contested before. Will we see exciting rivalries begin? Who do you think will advance?

WTA Washington day 3 predictions

Zhu Lin versus Kaia Kanepi

Head to head: first date

It was a pretty quick turnaround from Prague to Washington for Zhu Lin, but she did great in the first-round win over Harriet Dart. Kaia Kanepi had not played since Wimbledon but wasted no time sending out Greet Minnen either. The Estonian has played a slightly easier schedule this year but still suffered few early losses (until the grass season). Back in more favorable conditions, Kanepi should find a way to control the rallies here.

Rebecca Marino vs. Andrea Petkovic

Head to head: first date

Andrea Petkovic knocked out Clara Tauson in the opening round, but the Danish played for the first time in a while and just wasn’t ready for this level. The German veteran can still deliver great tennis at times, but she won’t be the favorite for this match. Rebecca Marino is coming out of qualifiers and although all her games so far have ended in deciding sets she has proven she is capable of stepping up her game when needed. Their powerful hits should complement Washington courts pretty well, too.

Jessica Pegula vs. Daria Saville

Head to head: first date

Daria Saville is secretly having a very good campaign and the last time we played hard courts in the States she made it big at the Sunshine Double. So did Jessica Pegula, who, like the Australian, had not competed since Wimbledon. Saville got off to a tougher start in Washington, surviving a thriller against Miriam Bjorklund. It seems like a good matchup for Pegula, who can be sure that she can play her game as the opponent won’t put enormous pressure on her in the rallies.

Simona Halep vs Anna Kalinskaya

Head to head: First date

Simona Halep has performed very well on hard courts for the first three months of the season, but her win in the opening round against Cristina Bucsa was shaky. Leading 6-4, 5-2, the Romanian was broken twice to end the game 7-5. However, now that she’s shaken off the rust, she should be back to her dominant best. However, Anna Kalinskaya could present quite a tough challenge after knocking out a beaten Madison Brengle in her first match here.

Prediction: Halep in 2nd
