Simona Halep Australian Open

Toronto WTA Quarterfinals Predictions including Gauff vs. Halep

It’s quarterfinals at the National Bank Open at WTA 1000 level in Toronto. It’s been a week of excitement in Toronto, with just two of the top 10 seedlings remaining in the draw, any remaining player will feel they have a legitimate chance to go all the way. 7th seed Jessica Pegula is the highest seed left, facing a tricky test against Yulia Putintseva, while Simona Halep is arguably the favorite to go all the way, meeting 10th seed Coco Gauff. Let’s take a look at Friday’s quarterfinals. Who goes into the semifinals?

Predictions for the Quarterfinals of the WTA Toronto

Jessica Pegula vs Julia Putintseva

H2H: First meeting.

This will surprisingly be the first time Pegula and Putintseva have faced each other on the WTA Tour. Pegula secured her spot in the last eight with a hard-fought 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 win over defending champion Camila Giorgi. It’s another solid result for Pegula, who just made her debut in the top 10 after another impressive season.

Meanwhile, Yulia Putintseva has been making the most of her luck this week to get one of her better results in some time. Putintseva narrowly defeated qualifier Katherine Sebov in the first round, 7-5 in the third before benefiting from a one-set elimination of Paula Badosa. Putting on her most complete performance of the week, Putintseva secured a place in the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Alison Riske. It will be interesting to see if Putintseva’s versatility can unsettle Pegula, because playing against Giorgi in the previous round is not a good preparation for this clash. I sense that Putintseva could create the excitement.
Prediction: Putintseva in 3

Karolina Pliskova vs. Qinwen Zheng

H2H: First meeting.

Karolina Pliskova and Qinwen Zheng Each came through dramatic three-set matches to advance to the quarterfinals. Pliskova stumbled across the finish line multiple times before eventually defeating an erratic Maria Sakkari 6-1 6-7 6-3. While Zheng defeated Bianca Andreescu 7-5 5-7 6-2. Both players will try to perform a similar style on the first meeting between the two. Experience is on Pliskova’s side, which could be the most valuable advantage in this relatively even clash with a place in the semifinals at stake.

Belinda Bencic vs Beatriz Haddad Maia

H2H: Bencic 1-0.

Beatriz Haddad Maia added another significant chapter to the best season of her career as she upset world No. 1. 1 Iga Swiatek 6-4 3-6 7-5 to reach Toronto last eight. Haddad Maia became the first Brazilian to reach the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 event. In the meantime, Belinda Bencic has moved into the last eight without losing a set.

The Swiss has pulled off two dominant wins against notable opponents, a 6-2, 6-4 win over Serena Williams followed by a 6-1, 6-3 win over Garbine Muguruza. Bencic defeated Haddad Maia 6-3, 6-2 in their only previous encounter earlier this year in Sydney. Haddad Maia has improved significantly since that game but I still think Bencic will come out on top. Haddad Maia’s tricky play can throw opponents off course, but Bencic has consistent, aggressive play to counter and she will enjoy the Brazilian’s left patterns influencing her stronger backhand side.
Prognosis: Bencic in 2

Coco Gauff vs Simona Halep

H2H: Halep 3-0.

Cori Gauff and Simona Halep will face off for the third time this season when they fight in Toronto. Halep has defeated Gauff in straight sets in each of his previous encounters this season, a 6-3, 6-4 win at Indian Wells and most recently a 6-4, 6-4 win at Madrid. Gauff’s form and confidence have grown since those encounters; She will certainly have a better chance of winning on this occasion.

Still, I think Halep will continue her dominance of the American. Gauff has racked up two grueling victories, including a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 win over Aryna Sabalenka in the preliminary round, a match that lasted just over three hours and was the longest of her pro career. It’s not ideal preparation to face someone like Halep. Meanwhile, Halep made it through the draw without dropping a set and is generally playing very well in this tournament.
Prediction: Halep in 2nd
