WTA Cincinnati day 3 predictions

Petra Kvitova vs Sorana Cirstea

head to head: 5-4 Kvitova

The two veterans meet for the 10th time, with Kvitova having a slight advantage. However, they have only played twice since 2016, both games having been won by Cirstea in the last two Australian Opens. Not surprisingly, Kvitova had a good season on grass, where she clinched her only title in 2022, while having mixed results on hard. She lost her first match hard in Toronto and looked shaky against Jil Teichmann here in three tight sets, where Teichmann served for the match and later had a match point in the second set. Cirstea pulled off a big first-round win over Belinda Bencic in another tight game where her serve helped make the difference. Kvitova has to rely on her big serve to win, but Cirstea has looked better and played well against Kvitova recently, allowing her to end the upset in a tight serve.
Prediction: Cirstea in 3

Shelby Rogers vs. Amanda Anisimova

head to head: 3-0 Rogers

Rogers has won all of his meetings, including two this year on hard courts. After struggling with injuries and getting back in top form, Anisimova seems to be back playing some of her top tennis matches this year. Rogers is also in great form and a few weeks ago reached the final in San Jose where she defeated Anisimova in straight sets in the quarterfinals. This match could go either way if both players play well and have excellent first round games here. The slight difference will be the faster courts here in Cincinnati, hurting Anisimova’s big groundstrokes that make her so dangerous on clay. The match is close to a toss-up but Rogers has a slight advantage with speed on court and knows how to beat Anisimova so she’ll take it in a long fight.
Prediction: Rogers in 3

Victoria Azarenka vs. Emma Raducanu

head to head: first date

This match is interesting between two players of immense talent who sometimes struggled to win big. Raducanu fought after her this year US Open Victory in 2021 with just a 12-14 record on the season. Azarenka has been stronger this year after missing most of last season, but she has yet to reach a final.

A glaring issue is that Raducanu has not only struggled to win games, he has yet to win convincingly. She hasn’t beaten a top 40 player all year. While Azarenka wasn’t her absolute best, she’s certainly dangerous enough to be at this level. Azarenka is strong and will use her power to give Raducanu more than she can handle. Raducanu looked great against an out-of-form Serena Williams, but Azarenka is on a different level and will win fairly easily.
Prediction: Azarenka in 2
