Josef Newgarden is once again the PointsBet Sportsbook Favorite for Bommarito Automotive Group 500 on Saturday at the World Wide Technology Raceway in Gateway (6pm ET, USA Network). For more information on how to watch, go to click here.

Newgarden is the defending champion of this race and in 2020 scored another win in the second half of a doubleheader at Gateway. He has another win at the minimal banked oval from 2017 and top-10s for the next two seasons. These results contribute to a moderate +245 line ahead of track activity this weekend. Newgarden won the first half of the Iowa doubleheader that year before crashing badly in the second race.

One way to display American Odds is to move the decimal point two places to the left. That lets a bettor know what they’re going to do with a $1 bet, so this week’s return on investment for Newgarden is $2.45. For bettors more comfortable with fractional odds, a +300 bet is the same as 3/1.

With nearly the double line, Pato O’Ward is second at +450 and has a record that easily rivals Newgard. Dating back to the first race of Gateway’s 2020 doubleheader, he has finished top five in all but one oval race in the IndyCar Series. Two of those were wins, last year at Texas Motor Speedway and the recent oval race at Iowa Speedway. O’Ward was second in the first half of this doubleheader, but that’s his only top 10 in the last seven races.

Willpower is slightly higher than O’Ward at +500. His season was all or nothing, with 10 top five finishes in the first 14 races of 2022 and the rest outside the top 10. Only one of those disappointing results came on an oval, however, when he finished 15th at the India 500 .

Colton Herta opened at +725 midweek – a surprising line considering he hasn’t made a top-10 on an oval in his last six starts. His best performance in 2022 earned him 12th place in Texas and Iowa. The saving grace for Herta is that he is edging out of his fifth top-five of the season after finishing fifth on the streets of Nashville.

At +900 Scott McLaughlin rounds out the top 5 and is the last rider under 10/1. He has made top fives on his last three attempts, including a third-place finish in the second half of the Iowa doubleheader.

Jimmie Johnson (+3000) is a notable dark horse on ovals. He scored his first IndyCar top 10 in Texas this spring, ran well at the Indy 500 before crashing seven laps from the finish, and clinched his first career top 5 in Iowa. If he can win this weekend it’s worth 30/1.
