Kate Middleton is teaming up with her favorite tennis star Roger Federer. The Duchess of Cambridge and Federer are set to host a tennis day in East London next month to support two charities: Action for children and the LTA Foundation.
The Day of Tennis, which gives children aged 8 to 15 a chance to play tennis alongside Federer himself, takes place while the Laver Cup is taking place in London. Kate is a patron of Action for Children and the Lawn Tennis Association (the LTA Foundation is her charitable arm); Ticket sales for the Laver Cup Open Practice Day benefit both organizations.
As Kensington Palace said in a press release: “Her Royal Highness is passionate about supporting sport at grassroots level and encourages young people from all backgrounds to get involved in sport.”
Kate is a regular at Wimbledon, and self-confessed tennis fan; So it only makes sense that she would bring in 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer to promote the sport among young people of all backgrounds.
Federer will be in the spotlight at the Laver Cup in London in September. The Laver Cup is a relatively new tennis tournament unlike any other on the regular tennis calendar; The players are divided into Team World and Team Europe, and the location changes every year. This year, Team Europe consists of the ‘big three’ in men’s tennis (Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Federer) as well as Andy Murray, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud, and Team World consists of American stars such as TaylorFritz and Jack Sock, along with Argentinian Diego Schwartzman and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Federer’s participation will mark his return to the sport after a lengthy absence and rumors are swirling around his retirement. So it makes sense that he would use the limelight to give back – while working with the royal family’s biggest tennis fan.
This isn’t the first time Federer has been involved with the royals; he gave a tennis lesson to a young Prince George at the Cambridge home in Norfolk. Federer noted that George had a “good swing”. He also shared, “His mother always enjoyed tennis. I hope he will be the same in a few years and this is not just a momentary situation.”
Last year the Duchess took to the courts to play with rising British tennis star Emma Raducanu after her win at the US Open. No word yet if Kate will play alongside Federer.
