WTA Cleveland Day 2 Predictions – Elise Mertens vs Sorana Cirstea

The top few players in WTA Granby appear poised for a deep run thanks to a weak draw. However, the same does not apply to the participants of the WTA Cleveland. The peloton features a healthy mix of established top players and rising stars, most of whom are in or very close to the top 100 in the game. top seeds Barbara Krejcikova and Martina Trevisan will be keen on deep runs. But such as Clara Tauson and Varvara Gracheva will try to disrupt the status quo. In this series of WTA Cleveland Day 2 Predictions, we cover five of the games taking place on Monday. Be sure to check out ours different prediction set for a look at the other five.

WTA Cleveland day 2 predictions

Clara Tauson vs. Harmony Tan

Head to Head: First meeting

Harmony Tan had the moment of her career when she hit Serena Williams in the first round of Wimbledon in late June. She won two games there and would win three games and would be ranked much higher than No. 110 if points were awarded for that run. Unfortunately, that’s not the case, so she had to qualify for this tournament. She did so comfortably with two straight wins. Her reward is a tough first round against rising star Clara Tauson. The young Danish star looks like a future contender for major tournaments. she already has two WTA titles to her name at just 19 years old. She has more power and serves better than Tan, which will pay off on those courts. Tan has to look elsewhere for the points she needs to crack the top 100 because she can’t get them here.

Prediction: Tauson in 2nd

Anhelina Kalinina vs. Laura Siegemund

Head to head: 1 – 0 Siegemund

This game is a lot tighter than it appears on paper. Laura Siegemund is a former top 50 player who has worked her way back from injury problems. But that doesn’t mean she’s not fighting it here. Anhelina Kalinina is in the form of her life after winning five ITF titles last year. She has slowed down a bit in 2022 but still looks like she belongs on the WTA Tour. She’s also a better hard court player than the German and should be able to claw out a hard-fought win here.

Prediction: Kalinina in 3

Varvara Gracheva vs Madison Brengle

Head to Head: First meeting

Gracheva goes into this match with eight losses in a row. The Russian is desperate for a win and some form. However, she faces an uphill battle to get one here against the ever-consistent Madison Brengle. The American has enjoyed the best period of her career over the past 12 to 18 months. However, her form has slightly deteriorated and she is ripe for this match. I expect Gracheva to fight with everything she has for a win she desperately needs. That should be enough to see her across the line in this one.

Prediction Gracheva in 3

Lauren Davis vs Ekaterina Alexandrova

Head-to-head: 1-0 Alexandrova

Ekaterina Alexandrova is one of the more so-so players on the WTA Tour and that makes it difficult to call her matches. On her day she can beat anyone from one place provided they have a bit of pace. However, when she’s out, she’s a mess of errors and double faults that’s hard to watch. Which version we get determines very much how this match will play out. She recently won a title on grass which suggests she is enjoying her tennis at the moment. So I expect her power to be too much for Lauren Davis here. The American is a great counterattacker and a rising star on court. However, accurate power almost always wins on fast hardcourts and Alexandrova has the advantage there.

Prediction: Alexandrova in 2

Elise Mertens vs. Sorana Cirstea

Head to Head: 3 – 0 Cirstea

Elise Mertens got a little out of hand last year. The Belgian played immense tennis and knocked on the door of the top ten from 2018 to early 2021. Since then, it has slowly slipped down the pecking order and is currently ranked 32nd in the world. This matchup is not good for them either. Sorana Cirstea has won all three of their previous encounters. She is also at her highest rank since 2017 and is playing some of her best tennis matches this year. Mertens has the game to disrupt everyone in their day, but we haven’t seen this level in a while. Cirstea looks perfect to cause another upset here and extend her win streak to four against Mertens.

Prediction: Cirstea in 3
