Andy Roddick says Serena Williams’ retirement will be ‘bigger circus’ than his: ‘So many eyeballs’

Former tennis pro Andy Roddick played his last professional game at the US Open 2012, when then Serena Williams announced that she would end her career in the same way, he knew he could relate to it.

“It’s been one of the most fun weeks I’ve ever had in my career,” Roddick said when announcing his suite partnership, Guest How Andy Roddick Guests Kimpton Hotel Eventi to celebrate the US Open. “I was able to get through the second week and actually had a decent run and it was all the tennis back innocence [then] without the pressure of tomorrow because it really didn’t matter at the time. So it will be different with Serena.”

“Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family,” says the six-time US Open champion. “I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a man I wouldn’t be writing this because I would be out there playing and winning while my wife does the physical work to expand our family. Maybe I’d be more of a Tom Brady if I had the chance.”

The sport has gained a lot more fame since 39-year-old Roddick hung up his racquet, so he appreciates the way Serena has decided to call it a career.

“I think I can relate on a very small level to just having done something for your whole life and then having to deal with the emotions that tomorrow isn’t guaranteed,” says Roddick. “But of course it’s going to be a much bigger circus for Serena, and rightly so. Personally, I’m glad she announced it so she can say goodbye.”
