The last four play in Cleveland. Of the eight top seeds, only two have made it this far. These two are Alize Cornet and Aliaksandra Sasnovich. They are joined by two women, Bernarda Pera and Ludmilla Samsonova, who have already won titles on the WTA Tour this year. Only two can keep fighting for the title and in this predictions article we take a look at who those two could be. This tournament will serve as a great momentum springboard ahead of the US Open. Each of these four will desperately strive to be themselves. With that in mind, let’s stick with our semifinals predictions for WTA Cleveland.
WTA Cleveland Semifinal Predictions
Aliaksandra Sasnovich vs. Alize Cornet
Head to Head: 2-0 Sasnovich
Given the current form of the other two players, this game feels like it will decide who will finish second in the final. However, neither will see it that way and it should certainly be a great match to watch. Aliaksandra Sasnovich has been very convincing in Cleveland so far. She played good aggressive tennis from the ground and protected her serve well. She needs to continue that trend against a determined competitor in Alize Cornet. The French star never goes down without a fight and is a tough opponent to beat even on her days off. If Sasnovich can hit the ball as well as she has all week, then she should win. However, Cornet was able to elicit enough mistakes from her opponent to sneak them. I will support the Belarusian here, but it could really go either way.
Prediction: Sasnovich in 3
Ludmilla Samsonova vs. Bernarda Pera
Head to Head: 1 – 0
Pera and Samsonova are probably the fittest players on the WTA Tour right now. Pera has won two titles and 19 of her last 20 Games in the last four weeks. Likewise, the Russian has won eight times in a row and won a title in Washington last week. Both sit on two career titles, but only one gets a chance to contend for a third. Pera is probably more dangerous on clay, so the surface advantage goes to the Russians in this case. Samsonova also has more power on the ground than the American. Pera needs to defend well and take every risk to be aggressive and dictate points with her forehand. I think Samsonova has yet to reach another level in terms of her game and she should have too much for Pera here. Either way, it’s going to be a spectacular match not to be missed!
Prediction: Samsonova in 3
