Leylah Fernandez reflects on 12 months since US Open final

Leylah Fernandez looks back on 12 months since the US Open final

Leylah Fernandez says she’s happy with her performance since her maiden Grand Slam final at the US Open last year. 19-year-old Fernandez was around 70th place when she overwhelmingly reached the final of the US Open last season.

Fernandez has since appeared in a final, having gone all the way in Monterrey earlier this year. Fernandez also had another notable Grand Slam run when she reached the quarterfinals of the French Open this year. It should be noted that Fernandez was seriously injured during her French Open quarterfinals and it was one of the main reasons why she was beaten by Martina Trevisan.

“I am satisfied with my performance. I thought everything would be perfect. I knew there would be some bumps along the way and I just had to find solutions, get through those tough moments.

I think it was a great learning experience not only to learn about my tennis game but also about myself what I love to do which has helped me in those moments to keep getting better as a person and enjoy my time on tour” , Fernandez said via Tennis Majors.

Fernandez hopes for another good run at the US Open

After the French Open, Fernandez missed the entire grass season, including Wimbledon. Earlier this month in Toronto, Fernandez returned to competition after two and a half months.

Since her return, Fernandez clinched a second round exit in Toronto while being beaten by Cincinnati in the first round. Fernandez didn’t have an ideal preparation for the US Open, but she will certainly give her best at Flushing Meadows.

Fernandez will play Oceane Dodin in the first round of the US Open. Fernandez and Dodin will face off for the first time when they meet in the first round of the US Open.
