Rafael Nadal on Roger Federer: 'I can not wait to play with him'

“I can’t wait to play with him”

Roger Federer hasn’t played in over a year and is struggling with a knee injury despite undergoing three surgeries. Roger should return to action at next month’s Laver Cup, teaming up with Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

Rafa spoke about Roger ahead of the US Open, praising his big rival and hoping to see him back on the court soon. Nadal and Federer played together for the first time at the first edition of the Laver Cup in Prague in 2017.

They faced Jack Sock and Sam Querrey in a 6-4, 1-6, 10-5 win to put Team Europe ahead 9-3. Sock and Querrey had a chance to spoil Federer and Nadal’s party. They had just one break chance in the entire duel (the one that cost them the first set) and created nine break chances, two of which they took in the second set.

Both teams found the rhythm on serve early in the opener, delivering six comfortable holds before Sock lost serve 3-3. Nadal served to confirm the break in game eight and he and Roger played against four break chances. The Legends stayed calm and fought them off to cement the advantage.

Roger served in the tenth game for the opener and pulled off a good 6-4 hit after 39 minutes that brought the proud 35 Major title holders closer to the finish line.

Suddenly, Roger and Rafa lost their magic in the second set.

Team World leveled up to dominate and force a decision. Sock and Querrey broke Nadal in game four and repeated it two games later with Federer to send the encounter into a crucial match tiebreak. Like true champions, Federer and Nadal resumed their game and, thanks to three mini-breaks, took an 8-1 lead.

Ready to fight, the Americans reduced the deficit to 9:5. Nonetheless, that was all we saw of them as Rafa and Roger took the 15th point to seal the deal and celebrate their first and only win on the same side of the pitch.

“We’re happy to see Roger back on track. I hope he’s well enough to play. I haven’t seen him for a long time so I hope he can make a comeback in London. Which I did before what I said about Serena is the same for Roger.

The main thing is that he is healthy and happy. If that’s the case, it would be incredible to see him back on the pitch. We can only thank Roger for everything he has done. I am confident that we will see more from him. I can’t wait to work with him,” said Rafael Nadal.
