Keep it here for all the news, notes and analysis from day two of the 2022 US Open.

Iga Swiatek sails to victory on the first lap

The women’s No. 1 lived up to expectations in the first round of the 2022 US Open. Iga Swiatek drove to a win over Jasmine Paolini on Tuesday, defeating her 6-3, 6-0 in straight sets.

After swapping a few games with Paolini early on, Swiatek came full circle as the game progressed. She didn’t let Paolini make a single game in the last set.

With the win, Swiatek advances to the second round. She is aiming to take home her second Grand Slam title in 2022 after winning the French Open in June. Swiatek has never reached the final at the US Open. She lost in the fourth round of the event last year.

Jessica Pegula advances to round two in straight sets

American Jessica Pegula has advanced to the second round of the 2022 US Open. Pegula defeated Viktorija Golubic in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) to move on.

Golunic committed four double faults in the match, making it harder for her to take the excitement. Pegula entered the tournament as No. 8 and should survive the first round. She did so in a dominating manner, winning five straight games at one point during the game.

Pegula hopes to build on her 2022 success at the US Open. She finished that year as a quarterfinalist at both the French Open and the Australian Open. Pegula has never advanced past the third round at the US Open.

Carlos Alcaraz advances in a walkover

Carlos Alcaraz moves into the second round. Alcaraz was involved in a close match with Sebastian Baez before eventually advancing due to a walkover.

Alcaraz went back and forth with Baez early on, winning the first two sets 7-5, 7-5. Although the match was closer than expected, Alcaraz produced at least one phenomenal highlight.

Alcaraz won the opening two games of the third set before Baez retired from the game through injury.

Paula Badosa, Belinda Bencic continue

It took Paula Badosa a rally to get past Lesia Tsurenko in the first round at the US Open. Badosa fell behind and lost the first set 6-3. She then rallied to win the second set 7-6 and the third and final set 6-3.

Belinda Bencic also punched the ticket for the second round here. Bencic also needed three sets to progress. After a 6-2 win in the first set, Bencic dropped the second set 6-4. She then rallied to win the final set 6-4, beating Andrea Petkovic to move on.

Qinwen Zheng teases No. 16 Jelena Ostapenko

Qinwen Zheng looked strong in one of the biggest surprises of round one on Tuesday. Zheng defeated No. 16 Jelena Ostapenko in a back-and-forth match to advance at the Open.

Zheng got off to a strong start, winning the first set 6-3. Ostapenko recovered and won the second set by the same score. The two fought in the final set, trading matches, but Zheng won 6-4. Their excellent serves could have been the difference. Zheng recorded 10 aces against Ostapenko’s four during the game.

Americans John Isner and Brandon Nakashima advance in Round 2

John Isner and Brandon Nakashima will represent the United States in Round 2 of the US Open. Both players won their first round matchups on Tuesday.

Isner defeated Federico Delbonis in straight sets (6-3, 6-1, 7-5) to claim the victory. Nakashima beat Pavel Kotov in straight sets (7-6, 6-2, 6-2) and emerged victorious.

Isner meets Holger Rune in the second round on Thursday. Nakashima plays Grigor Dimitrov on Thursday.

Sloane Stephens advances but two other Americans fall

Sloane Stephens fell back early but rallied late to defeat Greet Minnen in the first round of Tuesday’s US Open. Stephens lost the first set 1-6 but fought back to win the second and third sets from Minnen 6-3, 6-3.

This was not the case with Bernarda Pera and Claire Liu. Both Liu and Pera lost their first-round matches in straight sets. Liu was defeated by Anastasia Potapova, who won 6-1, 6-4. Pera lost to Anhelina Kalinina 6-4, 6-4.
