French tennis player Benoit Paire had a bizarre one-and-done US Open experiencelost to Cameron Norrie in straight sets in the first round on Tuesday.
On one Hot day in New YorkPaire went down 0-6 6-7 (7-1) 0-6, dropping the third set in just 20 minutes and reportedly rushing through the match looking disinterested.
“Maybe the heat took him by surprise,” Norrie said after the match.
“Obviously it was very hot and maybe towards the end of the third set he was playing really fast and trying to get the points really close. And maybe the heat was bothering him.”
Before the end of the third set, Paire was seen packing his bags with Norrie up 5-0.
After the match, Paire was asked if the US Open was the last time tennis fans saw him at a Grand Slam event, with Paire admitting he needed to find motivation.
“I was leading 5-3. I could have won the second set. It would have been good for me in my head, but my demons came back – the double faults – and it always starts the same way,” Paire told French magazine L’Equipe, according to Yahoo Sport Australia.
“We’ll see what happens. I’m not sure if I’ll continue the season, maybe I’ll stop there and see if I can continue next year.
“Even in Grand Slams I find it difficult to fight. I hope to one day find motivation, something that will make me love tennis. Right now I’m happiest when I’m at home and unhappiest when I’m at home. I’m in the tournament.”
It’s not the first time Paire has been accused of not doing his best. The Frenchman received one Code breach at Wimbledon in 2021 for lack of effort.
