“If you lose to someone three times, you get a lot of information about what you can do better,” Collins said. via WTATennis.com. “Being the player that Naomi is, she definitely cheered me on last time out. I just had to learn from it and make adjustments, and I think I did.”

Osaka, also struggling with a bad back, held a 3-0 lead in the first set before Collins pushed back. Eleven of their winners came with their backhand.

“I’ve been lucky in some big moments,” she added. “But I worked really hard for the points. She didn’t give me much for nothing. Overall I think it was a solid match, high tennis level from both of us.”

Osaka attributed their loss to overthinking on the pitch.

“I’m the kind of person who thinks a lot, to the point where I overthink. Sometimes when I’m playing games I have to tell myself to stop thinking, just walk more instinctively,” she said. “I feel like I just need to relax a bit because there’s so much random chaos going on in my head right now.”

Collins only has two WTA singles title in her career and has never progressed past the third round of the US Open. She was runner-up at the Australian Open in January.
