“By changing nothing, she changed everything”

“She didn’t change who she was and that changed everything for all of us,” says Euphoria star Zendaya during the 60-second clip.

Serena Williams has made what looks like the final arc of her legendary career following her loss in Friday’s US Open singles tournament, and Nike is celebrating the athlete for staying uncompromisingly herself all the way.

The popular sneaker brand released a 60-second clip commemorating Williams and her legacy on Saturday morning entitled “By Changing Nothing, She Changed Everything,” with guest voiceover narration from star actress Zendaya.

The video, created in collaboration with Wieden+Kennedy in Portland, features footage and images from Williams’ famous rise – from first batting as a child in Compton, California, to turning pro at 14 and winning 23 Grand Slam titles for nearly three decades.

“She didn’t change who she was, and that changed everything for all of us,” Zendaya says during the clip, honoring Williams’ ferocity in the face of bigotry, sexism, and other unfair criticism as she became the face of the majority white sport and a role model for black excellence.

In August, Williams announced the next chapter of her life in an essay that accompanied her September Cover issue of Vogue. She wrote, “I’ll be 41 this month and something has to happen.” She explained her decision to retire from tennis after winning 23 Grand Slam titles and becoming one of the greatest ever to play the sport.

She added in the essay, “If I have to choose between building my tennis resume these days and building my family, I’ll choose the latter.”

Gatorade released its own on Monday Video celebrates Williams’ unparalleled legacy with a narration from R&B icon Beyoncé. “To feel like a queen with the crown indefinitely, without apologies,” she said, adding, “Always loving to be a proud black woman, a parent, a dreamer. Always loving to be yourself – a whole you, the real you. To always love you.”

In a statement accompanying her video, Nike wrote, “Serena Williams redefined what it means to be a true champion. Her legacy goes beyond sport and has inspired generations. We look forward to continuing our long-standing partnership with her. And we thank her for everything she has done and will do in the future. Here is never changing who you are.”
