US Open: Led by Ons Jabeur, first-time quarter-finalists emerge at Flushing Meadows

Led by Ons Jabeur, the first-time quarterfinalists emerge at Flushing Meadows

All four quarterfinalists in the bottom half of the 2022 US Open women’s draw make their first appearances at this stage of the slam.

In the last game of the day, Ons defeated Jabeur Veronika Kudermetova in the round of 16 7:6 (1), 6:4.

The Tunisian, the fifth seed for the fortnight, needed an hour and 33 minutes to get past her 18th-place opponent.

Kudermetova led 5-3 in the first set before Jabeur made a comeback. In the tie-break of the first set, the 28-year-old quickly increased six set points before Kudermetova struck a winner to close the gap between Jabeur and her.

However, it was far too late for them as Jabeur secured the set with the next point. Jabeur grabbed an early break in the second set and held it long enough to serve in the ninth game for the match. However, she was broken back and Kudermetova had a chance to level the set to five with her serve in the 10th game.

On the contrary, it was Jabeur who had three match points and converted on the first.

US Open: Coco Gauff’s imposing continues

To reach the semifinals, Jabeur meets Ajla Tomljanovic.

The Australian, who defeated Serena Williams in a brave fight in the third round, defeated Liudmila Samsonova, who showed similar tenacity. It took Tomljanovic an hour and 57 minutes to secure a 7-6(8), 6-1 win.

In the opening set, both players fought a battle of wills in which Samsonova had eight set points.

However, Tomljanovic saved everything before taking the lead in the proceedings. In the second set, Samsonova seemed emotionally and mentally exhausted, although she didn’t stop trying. Tomljanovic, on the other hand, kept running and eventually secured the win on her serve in game seven.

Meanwhile, Coco Gauff and Caroline Garcia prepared a quarterfinal game against each other.

Gauff defeated Shuai Zhang 7-5, 7-5 in an hour and 56 minutes in their fourth-round match.

Gauff had 33 winners against Zhang’s 26 and 25 unforced errors against Zhang’s 29.

Finally, 17th-seeded Caroline Garcia edged out 29th-seeded Alison Riske-Amritraj 6-4, 6-1 in their fourth-round match. It took the French an hour and 22 minutes to clinch the win.

The quarterfinals of the 2022 US Open is the second major quarterfinal in the 28-year-old’s career. The only other time she reached a Grand Slam quarterfinal was at the 2017 French Open.
