Rafael Nadal’s 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz storms into fourth round at the US Open

NEW YORK – No. 3 Carlo Alcaraza 19-year-old Spaniard lost unseeded Jenson Brooksbya 21-year-old Californian, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 at Saturday’s US Open, advancing to the fourth round at a facility where he is very comfortable.

Rafael Nadalwas right at home at Arthur Ashe Stadium, meanwhile, winning his 30th game of the night there after working his way through quickly Richard Gasquet 6-0, 6-1, 7-5.

Alcaraz became the youngest man to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open last year and has provided impetus for another potential run there this summer.

On Saturday, he became the youngest man since Pete Sampras in 1989 and 1990 to reach the fourth round in consecutive Opens.

Alcaraz trailed 3-0 in the decider until winning six straight games to take off and surpass Brooksby. Brooksby was 20 last year when he went into the fourth round, where Novak Djokovic eliminated him in four sets.

Alcaraz, always frantic and on the move, seemed to blow out a pair of sneakers and needed a change of shoes mid-game. To celebrate the win, he gave away another pair of sneakers to fans.

“I played really, really well,” he said after the game at Arthur Ashe Stadium. “I knew it was going to be a tough game. I’m very happy with my performance.”

Brooksby paused in the second game and provided thrills as he fell backwards during a 17-shot rally but made an incredible recovery to win the point. He added to the crowd’s excitement when he broke the third seed to love in the next game.

However, the party would be short-lived as Alcaraz won the next six games. He will next play against Marin Cilic or Wither Daniel Evans.

Nadal has won four of his 22 Grand Slam titles at the US Open, most recently in 2019, when he last competed at the hard court tournament. Nadal, who cut the bridge of his nose with his own racquet in his second-round win, said his nose felt good throughout the game.

“A little bigger than usual, but it works,” he said with a smile. “The nose is still there.”

Nadal has won 34 straight sets against Gasquet and needed just over two hours to advance to the fourth round. He plays on Monday Frances Tiafoethe first American since mardy fish 2010-12 to reach the fourth round of the US Open in three consecutive years. Nadal has a 2-0 career mark against Tiafoe.

Elsewhere at the National Tennis Center, #7 Cam Norrie Punch #28 Holger Rune 7-5, 6-4, 6-1 and No. 9 Andrei Rublev got past #19 Denis Shapovalov 6:4, 2:6, 7:6 (3), 6:4, 7:6 (10:7). Norrie and Rublev play each other next, and Rublev’s match on Saturday lasted more than four hours.

Rublev hit only 38 winners and had nine aces versus Shapovalov’s 76 winners and 23 aces. Rublev needed five match points to finally win the match. The Russian collapsed to the ground and buried his face in his hands from exhaustion as the crowd in the stands went berserk after one of the best games of the tournament’s first week.

Rublev reached the quarterfinals of the US Open in 2017 and 2020 and also lost in the fourth round in 2019.

No. 11 seeds Jannik sinner also made the quarterfinals and batted Brandon Nakashima 3: 6, 6: 4, 6: 1, 6: 1 in the last game on Saturday night.
