WTA Slovenia Open Day 1 Predictions

That US Open is finished and dusted and Iga Swiatek is champion again. That being said, there is still a lot to do in the final weeks of this year’s tennis season. WTA titles, ranking points and potential spots in the WTA Finals are still up for grabs. That should ensure a good few weeks of tennis on the WTA Tour. Action for the women’s side of the game continues on Monday, with several tournaments taking place in different countries. These WTA Slovenia Open Day 1 predictions cover the four games in Portoroz, so we’ll stick with those. However, be sure to check out our other prediction sets for an analysis of games taking place in other tournaments.

WTA Slovenia Open Day 1 Predictions

Ekaterina Alexandrova vs. Marta Kostyuk

Head-to-head: 1-0 Alexandrova

This will be a match with lots of firepower and aggression. Both are great ball forwards with immense power on either wing and neither is shy about going for their shots. Ekaterina Alexandrova has a better serve, which will be an advantage on these courts. However, both are quite streaky and this one could go either way. Marta Kostyuk has shown signs of improving form over the past few weeks and based on that I’ll give her the advantage here. The young Ukrainian has a long way to go in women’s football but she has the potential to be great and could show it with a good run here.

Prediction: Kostyuk in 3

Clara Tauson vs Beatriz Haddad Maia

Head-to-head: 1 – 0 Tauson

Clara Tauson started the year in absolute rupture and seemed in real danger of shooting up the ranks in women’s football. She’s slowed down a bit in the months since, but still seems to have a good chance of being something special in the future. Beatriz Haddad Maia also had a memorable year in 2022. The Brazilian won an incredible 12 games on grass this year. That works resulted in two titles and has her firmly in the mix for a season-ending WTA Finals spot. If Tauson arrives at her best she is likely to win, but the young Danish star is lacking in form and confidence and will struggle to defeat Haddad Maia with the Brazilian still having so much to play in the season.

Prognosis: Haddad Maia in Q3

Claire Liu vs Anastasia Potapova

Head to Head: 1 – 0 Potapova

Claire Liu is another young talent that many expected more of this season after an outstanding 2021 season. The young American hasn’t kicked as she would have liked and will need good performances over the next few weeks to ensure she remains in the top 100 in women’s football. In contrast, Anastasia Potapova has stormed back in emphatic style this year from her injury concerns. She clinched her first WTA title in Istanbul earlier this year and will be hungry for more in the coming weeks. The Russian thrashed Liu at the US Open recently and a similar outcome is likely here.

Prediction: Potapova in 2

Emma Raducanu vs. Dayana Yastremska

Head to Head: First meeting

Emma Raducanus After being eliminated in the first round at the US Open, she plummeted 73 places in the WTA rankings. The Brit will be happy to salvage some of that back in the coming weeks, but it’s safe to say that 2022 wasn’t the year she was hoping for. The Brit failed to convince many that her triumph at the US Open last year was less of a miracle and more a sign of things to come. That being said, she’s young and has established herself as a good player on the tour. With Dayana Yastremska she meets another young talent here. The Ukrainian was also tipped for big things before injuries and a doping ban slowed her meteoric rise. However, she is showing signs of life this year and will pose a threat in the remaining tournaments. She has a win coming up and I think she could do some real damage in this tournament. That starts with a win here against a Raducanu still licking her wounds from the US Open.

Prediction: Yastremska in 2
