Hugo Gaston in action at the ATP NextGen Finals.

ATP Metz predictions for Day 1 including Gaston vs Korda

At the ATP Moselle Open 2022 in Metz, France, only two main draw singles matches are on the schedule on Monday. The qualifying competition will also conclude with four players participating in this way. Who do you think will win?

ATP Metz day 1 predictions

Quentin Halys vs. Evan Furness

Head to head: First date

This is a final round of the qualifier. While Quentin Halys has struggled on the ATP Tour this summer, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Frenchman hits some decent runs in the indoor season. That’s where he was most dominant Challenger in early 2022. Even Furness is a solid defender, but on a fast surface, Halys’ weapons should be way too many.
Prognosis: Halys in 2nd

Stan Wawrinka vs. Zsombor Piros

Head to head: First date

This is a final round of the qualifier. Stan Wawrinka beat Laslo Djere on Sunday and now only Zsombor Piros stands between him and the peloton. The Hungarian has been beefing up his attacking game in the last year or so and it works best with the extra pop from the surface like it’s coming here. The problem is that he might not even be the fitter player than the 37-year-old Swiss in this clash. Piros has been repeatedly held back by injury issues, not just recently but throughout his career. He should also be pretty vulnerable to being overwhelmed by Wawrinka’s power, since he doesn’t typically go up against players with this attack caliber.
Prognosis: Wawrinka in the 3

Aslan Karatsev versus Lorenzo Sonego

Head to head: Karatsev 3-0

Aslan Karatsev has already defeated Lorenzo Sonego twice this year, but all of their matches ended in straight sets. As much as the Russian has struggled all year, this is a great opportunity for Sonego to claim the first victory over his opponent. However, the Italian wasn’t in top form either. He’s generally the stronger indoor hard court player and he has a chance to prove that.
Prediction: Sonego in 3

Hugo Gaston versus Sebastian Korda

Head to head: Korda 1-0

Hugo Gaston usually loves to play in front of his home crowd and get his all-time best results Roland Garros and Bercy. He also had a very solid run at the Rennes Challenger last week, losing to Dominic Thiem in the semifinals. Sebastian Korda can definitely overpower him but it’s not like the American has been in great form lately. Gaston should be a real underdog in this game.
Prognosis: Gaston in 3rd place
