Zheng Qinwen in action at the WTA Tokyo Open.

WTA Tokyo Quarterfinals Predictions including Samsonova vs. Muguruza

It’s been a week of exciting tennis at the WTA Tokyo Open. The quarter-final line-up promises to be just as exciting, with star players across the board. As always, here at LWOT we will be providing our Game of the Day predictions. But who will make it to the semifinals?

Predictions for the WTA Quarterfinals in Tokyo

Petra Martic vs. Zhang Shuai

Head to head: Martic 2-0 Zhang

That should be a great match. Petra Martic impressively defeated sixth seed Karolina Pliskova in straight sets and has looked very dominant so far this week. Zhang Shuai came through a titanic encounter with Garcia and finished the job in the tiebreak of the final set. Both players find great form later in their careers.

The only main draw meeting between these two came in Miami in 2019, which Martic won very easily. Zhang has been very consistent and solid lately but this could be a tough match for her. Martic can punch very powerfully and overpower her opponents and I’ll give her the advantage here – although it should be a great fight.

Veronika Kudermetova vs Beatriz Haddad Maia

Head to head: first date

It has everything that makes a brilliant encounter. Both players are equipped with massive weapons that can sweep their opponents off the field. Veronika Kudermetova was absolutely reckless against Gomez and lost only one game. Beatriz Haddad Maia, who is having a great year, was set for an almighty clash with Osaka just for the Japanese star to pull back from his illness.

Kudermetova looked great in New York and was hardly challenged until eventual finalist Ons Jabeur passed her in straight sets in the fourth round. Haddad Maia plays great tennis but there are still question marks over her ability to have consistent deep runs. I think Kudermetova will be too strong here as her form suggests only a top elite player can beat her at the moment.

Prognosis: Kudermetova in the 3

Liudmila Samsonova vs. Garbine Muguruza

Head to head: Samsonova 1-0 Muguruza

I’m curious how this will play out. Garbine Muguruza has had a dismal year, to say the least, although she played passably in New York, where she reached the third round. Still, the Spaniard is far from her best at the moment and sometime soon a big run will be needed if she is to end this season on any real credit. Unfortunately, she has been dealing with one of the most in-form players on the tour in recent months.

Ludmilla Samsonova is in electric form right now, crushing the ball with impressive consistency. If she’s in her game, I don’t think there’s much Muguruza can do to challenge her in this current state. If Muguruza finds some form and confidence we could see an exciting game but the Russian is still my pick.

Prognosis: Samsonova in the 2nd

Zheng Qinwen versus Claire Liu

Head to head: first date

Zheng Qinwen has to be one of the most exciting prospects in tennis these days. Her immense ball strike, consistency, and confident demeanor bring her a lot of hype and attention, and it’s easy to see why. After swept aside Misaki Doi, she sped past top seed Paula Badosa in a very impressive manner.

Claire Liu is also having a great week and at 22 her future is undoubtedly bright. She’s had absolutely no issues with Riske or Mertens, suggesting she’s ready for that event as well. I can see it’s going to be a close match as Liu has a lot in her game to worry her opponents, but Zheng is the future superstar and that should be hers.

Prediction: Zheng in 3
