Serena Williams didn’t always want her 5-year-old daughter to be in the stands when she played tennis.

In a clip from Wednesday’s episode The Drew Barrymore Showthe newly retired tennis pro, 40, explains why she didn’t let her daughter Olympia come to their tennis matches until recently.

“Is it true that you didn’t want Olympia to go to the games because you were afraid you’d lose your killer instinct?” asks Barrymore Williams, who shares daughter Olympia with her husband Alexis Ohanian.

“I was just worried that I’d get distracted because I’d be like, ‘Wait, is she drinking? Does she?’ “Williams shares. “She came to a match one time, like super short, and I was like, ‘Oh my god, is she wearing sunscreen?’ It’s crazy.”

“I was stressed out and I was like, ‘Wait a minute, oh my God, I have to serve. That doesn’t make any sense’” she adds with a laugh. “So yeah, I actually never really had them at games until this summer.”
