Roger Federer’s last career match at the Laver Cup 2022 sparked deep emotions in the tennis community as well as some of its fiercest rivals, and Novak Djokovic is hoping he too can gain experience when that fateful day comes.
“It was just a very touching, very emotional moment,” said Djokovic on Tuesday before an ATP event in Tel Aviv. via Reuters.
“When I saw his children and his family, it also touched me emotionally. I must also say that I thought about what it would look like for me if I said goodbye to tennis.”
The 20-time Grand Slam champion gave a tearful goodbye to the tennis world last week as he and Rafael Nadal has teamed up one last time for a double match in London.
“It was a perfect journey,” said Federer after the 4: 6, 7: 6 (2), 11: 9 defeat. “I would do it again and again.”
Despite the defeat, the crowd roared for Federer, whose eyes filled with tears. Soon his teammates would share the same sentiments. He was joined on the pitch by his parents, wife and their four children as members of both teams banded together to lift Federer into the air.
“There is definitely one thing I would like to have, other than of course my family and the close people in my life, I would like to have my biggest rivals and competitors there. Because it added something special, added more meaning to this moment”, added Djokovic.
Federer announced his retirement Earlier this month, citing a series of injuries that have hampered the final years of his career.
Federer ended his tennis journey with 20 Grand Slam wins and 103 career titles.
