American qualifier Alycia Parks caused an amazing upset at Tuesday’s Agel Open when she defeated former world No. 1 and home hope Karolina Pliskova 6-0, 7-6 (3) in the opening round. Here are some numbers behind the 21-year-old’s best win to date.
19: Parks’ win over world No. 19 Pliskova marks her first win over a top 20 player. Parks had only played against one top-20 player before, resulting in a loss to then No. 4 Ons Jabeur in Berlin earlier this year.
“This is my first top 20 win so I’m very thankful and thankful that I got through today’s match,” World No. 144 Parks said afterwards on the court.
4: It is Parks’ fourth main draw win of her career on the Hologic WTA Tour and her first on hard. Two of her previous Tour-level wins were on clay and the third on grass.
Parks is now 2-2 in their main draw at tour level this season. Park’s main draw win so far this year has been over then-No. 46 Zheng Qinwen in Berlin, which was her best win on the rankings ahead of Ostrava.
6: Parks fired six aces during the duel while Pliskova, third-best aces on tour this season, had none. The American’s solid serve, in which she won 72 percent of her points on the first serve, helped propel Parks to the 1-hour, 28-minute win.
“[The serve] comes naturally to me, I want to thank my dad because he’s the one who taught me,” Parks said. “He always gave me a rhythm, something like dance, one-two. So that was always in the back of my mind.”
84: But it was the return of Pliskova’s second serve where Parks really shone, winning 84 percent of those points (16 of 19). This led to Parks scoring a perfect 5-on-5 on break points in the duel.
fifteen: It was complete dominance in the first set for Parks, where she had 15 winners, with Pliskovas having one. Parks never had a break point in the 27-minute opener.
8th: In the second set, Pliskova led 3-1 with a break before Parks reeled off four straight games for a 5-3. However, the Czech prevented Parks from finishing the match that game and the pair achieved a tiebreak.
However, Parks took an early lead in the breaker as well, and the American clinched the win after Pliskova hit her eighth double fault on the first match point.
1: Parks is now one win away from the first Hologic WTA Tour Quarterfinals of her career. To get there, she must beat world No. 7 Maria Sakkari in her second round match. It will be the first meeting between Parks and Sakkari.
