‘Greatest Tennis Mom’ – Tennis legend Chris Evert detailed how her mom cheered on opponents more than she did

It was 1974. Chris Evert had reached the final of the French Open that year. Additionally, it was her fourth Grand Slam finals appearance after conceding defeats on the previous three occasions. This time, fate changed for the American star as she defeated Olga Morozova in the summit match at the 1974 French Open to win her first Grand Slam singles title.

For Evert it was just the beginning of a brilliant career. In addition, she added another 17 major titles to bring her tally to 18. During her childhood, Evert received massive support from her parents to pursue a career in tennis. She once praised her mother for her significant contribution to her career.

Chris Evert has special words for her mother

The American tennis legend once described her mother’s special qualities. she said, “My mother was the best tennis mom anyone could ask for. She was calm and friendly, even clapping louder for my opponents than for me just to be nice.”

Also, Evert added: β€œIn the early 1970s everyone fell in love with Evone Goolagong. When I defeated her at a USTA event, my mom, who already knew Evone, said to her afterwards, β€œOh, Evone, don’t worry. You’ll have her next time.” That was my mother.”

Evert was lucky to have parents who believed in her dream and supported her throughout her life. While Evert’s father looked to nurture her tennis skills, her mother would travel with her to tennis tournaments, providing the vital support any potential champion needs.

Evert pays tribute to Steffi Graf

Earlier this week, Chris Evert paid tribute to the German tennis legend to mark the 34th anniversary of Graf’s Golden Slam. she said, “Winning the Golden Slam will be almost impossible to repeat … and she achieved it with her trademark humility.”

Graf had accomplished this rare feat in 1988 when she won the gold medal at the Seoul Olympics. She was the first player, male or female, to achieve a golden slam in tennis.
